Too much testing in school? Tell the State Superintendent for a chance to win $250

Parents and caregivers,

As the State Superintendent of North Carolina’s public schools, I want you to know that your child’s success in school and beyond is our top priority. This school year, we want your input to make sure we are on the right track for students, parents, and teachers.

Today, we want to know your concerns about testing in school.

Too Much Testing!

Students, parents, and educators are concerned about too much testing. As both State Superintendent and a parent of a child in our public schools, I share your concerns.

We have already taken steps to reduce testing. Find out more by visiting this page

We have more work to do.

Please take our 5-minute survey on testing to tell us what you think.

CLICK HERE TO TAKE THE SURVEY

As an added incentive, after you take the survey, you can enter for a chance to win $250 right before your holiday shopping.

I will use your input to guide our work with state lawmakers and local school districts to reform the current system of over-testing.

We are working hard to improve our schools because every child should have the opportunity to go to safe and inviting schools, to work hard, and to succeed. Thank you for being a partner with us in this important mission.

Schoolmates Updates-Idlewild Elementary

Idlewild Elementary will be hosting its 10th annual Parent University Saturday, November 17th, 9:00am-12:00pm.  There is no fee for this workshop, and childcare is provided if needed.  Dr. Clayton M. Wilcox, Superintendent of CMS, will be delivering the opening address, "Champion Parents:  10 Years in the Making".  Please click below for the entire Parent University Schedule.

Idlewild is in need of some volunteers that are looking to make a BIG difference in children's lives.  You must be a CMS registered volunteer.

They are in need of volunteer Cheer, Step and Spring Soccer coaches.

They are also in need of "Mentors", "Lunch Buddies" and "Reading Buddies".  You will be assigned a student.  Volunteer times are flexible and up to the volunteer, but once you commit to a schedule, please be sure to show up when you are expected.  Most of these children need someone they can count on, and it will make a world of difference in their lives.

If you would like to help, please contact Teresa Taylor, Family Advocate, at Idlewild Elementary.

Thank you for all of your plastic bottles!

Mrs. Allen is so grateful for all of the plastic bottles that you've donated for art projects. Students did an awesome job collecting! At this time her room is overflowing with recycling. She has enough for her students to use for their art projects, and she does not need any more. Thanks again!

What is all the buzz about Paideia?

What is all the buzz about Paideia?  We are in year 2 of 3 working with the National Paideia Center to train our entire staff.  The focus this year is for our teachers to work paideia seminars into their own lesson plans and curriculum.

The introduction of Paideia to OP's instruction is motivating our students to engage in higher level thinking.  It increases academic rigor while encouraging our children to engage in discussion in a courteous and productive manner.  All OP students will benefit from this methodology.

WE WANT OUR CHILDREN TO BE THE PROBLEM SOLVERS OF TOMORROW!

Did you know that research shows that with the introduction of Paideia...

  • student academic performance increases
  • students show improved articulation
  • students model higher-order thinking skills
  • students experience less friction and alientation within the classroom

Just see what OP students have to say...

In case the video does not appear on your screen, please try this link to see what our OP students think about Paideia!

Spirit Rock Signup/Donations for Helping Hands

The OP Spirit Rock sitting in the grassy area in front of the school is a fun way for us to show some school spirit! Would you like to celebrate your child’s birthday or a special accomplishment? Then show it by painting THE OP ROCK for everyone to see. Click here to reserve the ROCK!

*Please consider making a donation to OP's Helping Hands fund for using THE OP ROCK using the School Store.  Helping Hands funds help students from OP and Idlewild Elementary with resources they need to be academically successful and to reach their full potential.

While signing up through sign up genius keep in mind, you can sign up for one day per child. The time you have is from 4:00 pm the day before you sign up until 4:00 pm on the date requested. Example: For a birthday that is on the 15th of the month, I would sign up for the 15th, but I could paint the rock on the 14th after 4:00 pm.
